相続の語源

相続の語源は仏教用語に由来します。

気軽に読める仏教入門書に、本願寺出版社・辻本敬順著・くらしの仏教語豆辞典（上・下）という書籍というがあります。600円でお値打ちと思います。とても良い本ですが、その中に「相続」が記載されています。相続は、元々は仏教語だったのです。以下内容を一部引用させて頂きます。・・・仏教では、すべての現象は諸行無常で、変化して一瞬一瞬生滅すると説きますが、その流れは継続するといいます。今、ここにローソクの火があります。その火それ自体は、一瞬に燃えつきて滅し、その直後に別の火が燃えて、それが絶え間なく連続するから、一つの火として燃えているように見える、というわけです。つまり非連続の連続。これが相続で、「倶舎論」などいろいろな仏典に出て来る仏教語です。その仏教語が現代使われているように、引き続き起こること、受け継ぐことの意味となって、一般にも用いられるようになりました。・・・（一部抜粋）このように辻本敬順師（著者）は解説されています。結びの一文も素晴らしいです。
